
Mary Elizabeth Cantu, a cherished member of the San Antonio community, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Tuesday, February 18, at the age of 45. Born on June 16, 1979, in San Antonio, TX, Mary lived a life full of passion, creativity, and dedication to the arts and education.
Mary’s academic journey began at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Museum Education with a focus on Cultural Anthropology and Elementary Education. She continued her education at the University of Texas, Austin, where she received a Master of Arts Degree with a focus on Community-Based Art. Mary’s educational background paved the way for her role as an inspiring art teacher and department chair at Henry Ford Academy. Mary was not just a teacher; she was a mentor who shared her love for the arts with countless students, fostering a nurturing environment that encouraged creativity and exploration.
A founding member of Spare Parts, Mary was committed to sustainability and creativity, championing innovative ways to reuse art materials to benefit educators and reduce waste. Under her leadership, the organization flourished, leaving a lasting legacy of environmental consciousness and artistic expression. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she frequently volunteered with various schools and spoke at state and national art conferences, advocating for the transformative power of the arts.
Mary was known for her vibrant personality and wide circle of friends. She loved to travel, seeking inspiration from the world around her. Her affection for animals was evident in her deep bond with her beloved pets, including her loyal dog Franklin, who was by her side for 15 years, and her cherished cat Migo.
